Building Stronger Futures: Helping Young People Navigate Conflict, Communication and Exploitation
This week at The Pythian Club, in partnership with Futures, we worked with our youth cohort to explore some of the complex challenges young people may face in their everyday lives, including relationships, communication, conflict, exploitation and radicalisation.
The session focused on giving young people practical tools to recognise difficult situations, communicate effectively and make safer, more informed decisions.
A key part of the discussion centred around conflict resolution. Young people explored how disagreements are a normal part of life, while learning restorative approaches that encourage conversation, reflection and understanding rather than blame or escalation. We also looked at cross-cultural communication and the importance of asking questions rather than making assumptions based on differences in tone, language, slang or body language.
The group discussed healthy boundaries and how to recognise the difference between constructive and unhealthy conflict. We also explored some of the less obvious signs of exploitation, including situations where gifts, attention, protection or friendship can develop into pressure, control, debt or expectations of loyalty.
Another important area was radicalisation and online influence. Young people learned how individuals can be targeted through their desire for belonging, identity and acceptance, as well as some of the warning signs to be aware of and where to seek appropriate support.
By creating a safe environment for open and thoughtful conversations, we can help young people develop the confidence and vocabulary they need to recognise potential red flags in relationships, online spaces and their wider communities.
We were incredibly proud of the maturity, openness and empathy shown by everyone who took part in the session. Through our partnership with Futures, we will continue creating opportunities for young people to learn, communicate and build the skills they need to navigate the world with greater confidence and awareness.
